march - april painting part III
reality is everything all at once.
conscious identity is able to focus attention to specific events and so events,
recorded in sequence, become a memory of time. is time just a memory?
in the painting my life is all at once.
in this video i attempt to show some detail of the transitions that take place in featured sections.
since about 2003 i began painting large acrylic paintings that are narrative experiments. i consider them narrative, in that they are not necessarily scenic . they are assemblages of visual language that are representative of text. the presentations are abstractions of time and place in my experience of communicating my message.
the message is also abstract. and personal. i am a being in the environment of society. the language is my invention for expressing universal intuitive understanding . for the viewer, ( & for myself).
for the most part, paintings are suppose to be attractive or interesting. they are meant to fill space on peoples walls. in this regard, i strive for interesting compositions and arrangements of information. i believe my finished works are reasonably successful in that requirement. it is not so important for the viewer to explore the painting as it is for them just to enjoy the overall use of space.
in the 8o's i was using watercolor on paper. the paper size was generally from 8" X 6" to 24" X 17" . it took some practice to know when to stop on a painting. one is able to easily overwork water color into a muddy, dreary, hopeless loss of time paper and paints. i learned the practice, and style to stop sooner rather than later. working with representational forms the final result was satisfactorily appealing, even when a form is left undone, or just suggested.
after i started working on the large narrative paintings i never know when to stop. the painting could always express more. they are left full of possibilities.
i set a time limit for this work so it is done.
i say it is finished.
next i will be recording a series of small experimental paintings .
i plan to be able to display them in June.
